Oktoberfest 2026 Entry Rules: What You Can and Cannot Bring

Oktoberfest is meant to be enjoyed with a cold beer, good company and as little stress as possible. That becomes much easier when you know what to bring — and what to leave at your hotel.

The 2026 Oktoberfest takes place at Munich’s Theresienwiese from September 19 to October 4, 2026. As in previous years, the festival grounds will be fenced and visitors will pass through security checks at the entrances.

Arriving with little or no luggage is the easiest way to get inside quickly. Here are the most important entry rules you should know before visiting Oktoberfest 2026.

How Large Can Your Bag Be?

Large bags and regular-sized backpacks are not permitted on the festival grounds.

Your bag must have a maximum capacity of three litres and may not be larger than:

20 cm × 15 cm × 10 cm

That is roughly the size of a small handbag, belt bag or mini backpack. Security staff may inspect both the size and contents of your bag.

For most visitors, a phone, wallet, hotel key, ID and perhaps a light jacket are all you really need. Bringing fewer items also means spending less time at the entrance.

What Happens If Your Bag Is Too Large?

Larger bags and luggage must be stored before entering the festival.

Official luggage-storage facilities are available close to several entrances. However, storage capacity is limited and queues can form during busy periods.

If possible, leave suitcases, shopping bags and full-sized backpacks at your hotel before heading to the Wiesn.

Can You Bring Drinks to Oktoberfest?

You may bring drinks onto the general festival grounds as long as they are not in glass bottles.

However, you cannot take your own drinks into the beer tents or their beer gardens. Expect another check when entering a tent, even if you have already passed security at the main entrance.

There are also free drinking-water fountains around the Oktoberfest grounds. A small, unbreakable bottle can therefore be useful during a long day at the festival.

Just remember: your filled bottle cannot be taken inside a beer tent.

Are Strollers Allowed?

Strollers and pushchairs are generally permitted until 6:00 p.m. from Sunday to Friday.

They are not permitted at any time on Saturdays or on October 3, Germany’s national holiday.

Security staff may inspect strollers, and the normal restrictions also apply to diaper bags. A large diaper bag is therefore not automatically exempt from the bag rules.

If you are visiting with young children, a lightweight stroller or baby carrier is usually the easiest option when the festival gets crowded.

Parents should also know that children under six are not allowed to remain inside beer tents after 8:00 p.m., even when accompanied by their parents.

Can You Bring a Bicycle or Scooter?

Bicycles, scooters, e-scooters, skateboards, roller skates and similar forms of transport are not permitted on the Oktoberfest grounds.

Munich’s public transport system is usually the easiest way to reach the festival.

Most visitors use Theresienwiese station, but nearby stations such as Goetheplatz, Poccistraße and Schwanthalerhöhe can sometimes be useful alternatives when the main station gets crowded.

Are Dogs Allowed at Oktoberfest?

Pets are not allowed on the festival grounds.

This includes dogs and other animals regardless of their size. Properly identifiable assistance dogs are an exception.

Even without the official restriction, the crowds, noise and busy surroundings make Oktoberfest a difficult environment for most animals.

Which Items Are Prohibited?

Anything that could be used as a weapon should stay at home.

This is worth remembering if you are wearing traditional Bavarian clothing. A decorative knife might seem like a fitting accessory to Lederhosen, but it does not belong at Oktoberfest.

Prohibited items include:

• Glass bottles

• Knives and other weapons

• Harmful gases or spray canisters

• Corrosive substances

• Colouring or staining substances

• Cutting, stabbing or striking weapons

• Other potentially dangerous objects

Security personnel have the final say at the entrance. If you are unsure whether an item is allowed, leaving it at your hotel is usually the safest option.

What About Umbrellas and Medical Equipment?

Umbrellas are allowed, including larger models. On a crowded day, however, a small folding umbrella is much easier to carry around.

Necessary walking aids, medical devices and other medical equipment are also permitted. These items may be inspected by security staff when you enter the festival.

If you require specific medical or accessibility equipment, give yourself a little extra time for the security check.

The Easiest Way to Pass Oktoberfest Security

The best strategy is simple: bring only what you actually need.

For most visitors, a small bag containing your phone, ID, payment method, hotel key and perhaps a light rain jacket is more than enough.

Avoid arriving with luggage, glass containers, large backpacks or anything that could be considered dangerous.

Security checks are simply part of visiting Oktoberfest. Coming prepared means you can get through the entrance quickly and focus on what really matters: enjoying the atmosphere, exploring the festival grounds and finding your first Maß.
